Spirit in Motion

This year’s sporting season is yet to come to an end, but India is planning on leaving the arena with a bang! After our most successful Olympics in all of history, the Indian athletes participating in the Paralympics are truly carrying forward the same skills and spirit shown by the Olympians.

The Paralympics is a series of international sporting contests for specially abled athletes. In order to qualify as a Paralympian, one must have at least one of the 10 listed impairments such as:

Impaired muscle power, Impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, Leg length difference, short stature, Muscle tension etc

The Paralympics have adopted values such as courage, determination, inspiration and equality. In my opinion the Paralympics wholly represents these values. Who better to show how courageous and determined one can be other than an athlete with a muscle impairment training vigorously to finally be able to lift the weights during a powerlifting event? Who better to constitute the values of inspiration and equality if not these marvellous athletes who overcome their difficulties to participate on this global stage and win a medal for their country?

Truly a mind-boggling force that is to be reckoned with!

As of today, India has reached the double-digit mark by bagging 10 medals in the Paralympics! Exactly in line with the Paralympic motto of ‘Spirit in motion’.

Unfortunately though, we have to face the harsh truth being that there is a huge gap between the funds of Olympians and Paralympians. This is hardly fair. Every athlete representing their country must be treated with utmost respect and must be honoured for having represented their country on an international level. Paralympians are no less of athletes than Olympians and after the thunderous performance by our Indian athletes this Tokyo Paralympic Games 2021, I truly believe they are ‘specially ’ abled.
